Utilities, Ideas and Inspiration for the Innovative Job Seeker

Damn, I need a job!!

Frustrated Job Seeker
Without going into all the uninteresting details I found myself unemployed. "No big deal" I thought. "I'm a pretty smart guy with some pretty marketable skills so finding a new job shouldn't be a problem" I told myself. I got on all the big job boards, feverishly scanned help wanted ads in the classifieds, hooked up with employment agencies, called all my contacts and considered moving. I even opened up the Yellow Pages, started with the "A"s and sent resumes to every listing that had an e-mail address or web site. I couldn't help but feel like my resume submissions were getting lost in stacks of other applicants and getting "filed" without ever being read. It was totally freaking frustrating and I thought "If I could just get some face time".
Shameless Self Promotion
I was walking around downtown one day and realized that everywhere I looked there was someone who was either hiring or knew of someone who was and they might even be looking for someone exactly like me. So I started thinking about printing a stack of resumes and handing them out like flyers to passers by or putting them on wind shields. Pretty shameless I agree and I'd probably have to change my phone number after that. Also no guarantee people would even read it.

Straight up, no bones about it, no way to dispute it, if they can read People WILL Read What's On Your Shirt!

Put something about yourself on your shirt and not only will they read it they will strain to see it. They will position themselves for a better look. Stand in line at a fast food joint and at any given moment someone will be checking it out. I'm telling you people can't help it.

With a brief description of your skills and what you're looking for (a cover letter basically) on your shirt you will be getting interviewed constantly in the minds of people who read it! If they happen to know of something that might be a match it will occur to them to say something!

Damn I Need A Job - Shirts That Get You Noticed!!!

This is the original resume shirt available since 2005. Also available is the black shirt with static text that is just as cool and compelling! Click on the shirts on the right to order!

For any questions feel free to E-Mail me at Info@DamnINeedaJob.com

I printed the first shirt and wore it downtown just to get some pictures for this site and people were stopping me on the street! I won't say they all offered me jobs as some just said "That's clever, good luck" and stuff like that but I met people almost immediately! I had to tell two people that I didn't have a resume with me as I was just trying to get this site put together!

Get out there and get Noticed!!!
• Go downtown and just walk around!
• Sidewalk Cafes and fast food restaurants at lunch hour!
• The mall!
• Sporting events!
• Anywhere you wait in line!

Damn I Need A Job in the News
"Hey man, I'm walking around with my resume on my shirt!!"

Ok, I'm going to throw this idea out there for the serious and adventurous job seeker. Call the news and let them know what you're doing. Tell them you're walking around with your resume on your shirt. I DID!!!. Granted when I did it was an attempt to get some exposure for this site but the News station thought it was much more interesting to spin it as a story about a guy who "wears his credentials like a badge of courage" and not so much about this site . It did generate a lot of traffic for this site but that's not the best part. A lady, home sick from work, was watching the noon news when my story aired. She saw it and called the I.T. manager of the company she worked for who she knew was looking for someone like me. Call it Karma or whatever you like but things fell into place and I landed a great job. That was in mid 2005 when all that went down. You may not have this site to promote but I bet if you try you might get some press as a human interest story. Call them and tell them you are walking around with your resume on your shirt. GO TO ANY LENGTHS TO GET NOTICED!!!!!!!

Damn I Need A Job - Local News

This is the original news story that a local news station did. I'm not a big fan of it but here it is anyway. This was back in 2005.

Damn I need a job on cnn

More recently I was contacted by CNN for this interview. Needless to say I was pretty surprised. Initially the interview was supposed to be about how this sites traffic stats could be a representation of the current job situation in the U.S. but as you'll see that's not where it went.
Note From Larry
I'll admit that when I first started this site I had visions of it making some good money. As time went on the sales were always sort of lackluster. Let's face it, my target audience doesn't have money to burn. However, I found that the enjoyment I was getting out of operating this site was worth all the effort. I have received many emails from folks who have told me they have stumbled here in desperation and found inspiration. Boy, that was not my vision and I'm amazed that this site's success is not measured in a monetary way but rather the effect it has had on some people and the satisfaction that has given me. Order the shirt if you want one. Get a gift certificate to help a friend. If this site just made you laugh then so be it.

Think Before You Send, Pre-Resume Job Search Analysis Tips
By Guest Blogger: Micheal Collins

Expert Author Micheal Collins

So you're thinking about or are ready to start your job search and you ask yourself what is the first step? Often times, the first thing people think they need to do is update their resume ( or Linkedin Profile) and send it out to their industry contacts or start mass applying to jobs they find on Monster, CareerBuilder or other job boards; this is NOT the best way to do it. Why? Because you are mass applying to many jobs that may not be a fit and wasting valuable time.

Before you start sending out your resume you need to figure out what employers want and one of the best ways to get into their mind is by doing an analysis of job descriptions posted on indeed.com or company websites. This tip has several steps:

1. Find your job title
a. Write out what you think are the skills or tools you use most in your field or job. I would try to narrow it down to your top two skills and tools used. After you compile your short list go to indeed.com and type in those skills or tool names. The results should give you a sense of the title most often used; write down the top three titles.
b. If you are sure about your job title I would still go to indeed.com but instead of searching for the skills type the short version of your title. For instance, if you are an "Oracle Database Administrator" I would type "Database Administrator" and look for variations of that title.

2. Search job postings for opportunities
a. Once you have the most used job titles then do a search for opportunities. You should find a ton of jobs listed. Do a quick read of the job descriptions and select the top five that match your skills, abilities and experience level.

3. Conduct a job analysis
a. Copy and paste the text from your top five job descriptions into Microsoft Word. Read each job description carefully and highlight job relevant skills and tools most often mentioned.
b. After you have done a manual analysis go to wordle.net/create and paste the text from your top five job descriptions and click go. This will create a beautiful word cloud that can be help you zone in on words you selected with your manual analysis or help you see words you overlooked. I recommend limiting the number of words to 25; to do this just click on "layout" and then click on "maximum words" and set it to 25.

Once you complete this exercise you have started the process to strategically position your job search. Next week I will continue this planning theme and present a business idea that can be readily applied to the job search.
