6 definite ways to crash and burn your career
Flop 1- Doing it just for money, will get you nowhere quick...being an efficient mystery shopper not only takes dedication but a lot of planning too. Thus you have to find assignments that fit your character and lifestyle.
Flop 2- Signing up with every contractor in town, might sound like you have struck gold but when assignments start happening on the same day and time, you will really wish you have clones or quadruple siblings...and by the way let us not forget your reputation for being unreliable and unpunctual.
Flop 3- Thinking that everything is free...you wish sunshine (Luther and Janet only sang that song to make money-it is not true) the best things in life cost money. You must have a war chest (money that is not for the bills but for normal household expenses like Friday night pizza etc.) At first you will be using your own cash and once you have submitted your detailed reports, the company will reimburse you.
Flop 4- Not doing proper research or joining the right association will definitely put you in the scammers frying pan very soon. Now do not get me wrong, I am not saying that being a mystery shopper is not a legitimate form of employment but every profession has its dark side...Man, even accountants cook the books and they not even chefs (go figure)
Flop 5- Just because mystery shopping jobs seam so informal does not mean you can take it easy. There's taxes to be paid, courses to qualify in and last but not least (which is sometimes my favorite) seminars to attend, to keep abreast of new practice and procedure, in this high paced profession.
Flop 6- The last thing you can do is to give you contractor a lukewarm report (heaven forbid), firstly you might not get reimbursed (read the fine print) and secondly the worst could be the famous don't call us we will call you insult to injury after not receiving any payment...
All in all, I hope I have not deterred you from this lucrative industry but given your the strength and courage to do the right thing.
