Doing card tricks at an interview? Are you nuts?
Card tricks make people instantly like you, and you want your future boss to like you during the interview. Doing magic shows that you have a friendly personality and a certain charm. It also shows preparation and creativity. These traits will make you an attractive candidate for the job.
Now, some magic tricks are really difficult and require years of practice. I do not recommend doing these kinds of tricks at an interview, unless you want to show how witty you can be should it go wrong. I personally do the "card through the window" trick. Try it out and see how well it works.
Card Tricks Exposed: the "Card Through Window Trick"
Ask a spectator to pick a card without him seeing the face, then return it back to the deck. Shuffle the deck, then act like you can't find it. After a few attempts, you throw the cards against a window in a fit of rage. This is a hilarious opportunity to get some serious acting in, and the interviewer will think you are nutty for a moment. This only increases your charm in the end when you show that you were in control all along.
Now, on looking at the window, your interviewer will be amazed to see that the chosen card is sticking to it while it is on the inside of the window itself!
So what is the catch? This trick must be performed in an area having a large window nearby and the spectators facing away from it. It's perfect to do during an interview, because your future boss's office will always have a window in it.
The spectator who chose the card, should memorize it without showing it to you, and return it back to the deck. Make sure you try several random card selections while your future boss awkwardly tells you you chose wrong.
Now, another key to this trick is enlisting an assistant. This is where the office secretary comes in. While you're waiting to go in for the interview, you make sure she knows what you plan to do, and enlist her help. She will willingly do this, because it provides a pleasant break from an otherwise stressful day. This also makes you a friend on the inside who will help you get the job later on.
When you do the trick, the secretary will already be positioned behind the window, holding an identical deck of cards. The trick is that, when your interviewer chose the card and looked at it, the secretary saw it from behind and took it from her duplicate pack. She takes a small piece of looped sticky tape or even magician's wax and attaches the duplicate card and of course, it will be stuck to the inside window. Got it?
Practice it and go in confident!
Try this trick out on friends and family a few times before you attempt it in front of your future boss. Ask them how you can improve it and work on your performance and routine. In no time you'll have a great new "job skill" that will set you apart from the pack.
